The Regional Centre for Education, Integration and Democracy
– RAA Berlin – a promotion agency
for democratic school development and intercultural projects


The RAA Berlin has been in existence since 1991. It initiates and develops projects, supports teachers, teenagers, parents and voluntary workers at schools as well as in youth and community work. As agency for the development of a civil society it stimulates the interaction between school, youth and social work.


The RAA Berlin combines issues and functions in its work.

  • The RAA promotes a democratic and creative climate at schools and in their surroundings. As a promotion agency for democratic school development
    it co-operates with experts working at schools and in the field of spare-time events.
  • The RAA takes part in the development of programmes for foundations with regard to the interface of school and youth welfare. One close partner is the Freudenberg Foundation.
  • The RAA reacts with own projects to the ethnic classification (“ethnisation”)
    of conflicts and the social exclusion of minorities. In its project workshop it tests new models for school openness and participation.

The RAA Berlin co-operates in the current projects with the following institutions:

  • The administration of the Berlin Senate for education, youth and sports supports the Federal programme “Living and learning democracy” in Berlin
  • “Berliner Landesinstitut fuer Schule und Medien”, SCHERING AG: “Points of view” – a project for multipliers against right-wing extremism at schools in Berlin
  • Freudenberg Foundation and Amadeu Antonio Foundation: Peer leadership training for intercultural competence
  • Institute for a situational approach at the International Academy, “Freie Universitaet”, Berlin, Bernard van Leer Foundation Den Haag and Linden Foundation for pre-school education: Living democracy in kindergarten and primary schoo
  • European Union, Roma Union “Grenzland”, Association for the promotion of Roma in Frankfurt/Main: EQUAL –  a project for the improvement of chances for Sinti and Roma on the labour market in Berlin

The RAA Berlin has been realising further projects for a considerable time:

  • Consultation of Jewish immigrants from the Ex-Soviet Union
  • Professional education of young Turkish adults
  • Video projects for youngsters under the motto “Living with a cultural variety – against racism and exclusion”
  • Work with Roma and refugees
  • School clubs and other locally based preventive projects

The RAA Berlin presents in the “Intercultural Contributions” which are published at irregular intervals own projects as well as those of partners. Together with the publishing house “Ernst Klett” it publishes the series “Intercultural Contributions. Culture & Youth”, together with foundations it publishes the “Intercultural Contributions. Youth & School”
The RAA Berlin offers the following services:

  • Qualification courses and consultations concerning the development and organisation of projects on the issues of intercultural learning and learning democracy
  • Getting artists involved in pedagogical projects
  • Getting artists involved in pedagogical projects
  • Consultations by the Centre for schools and youth welfare concerning the issues: youth and community, service learning, pupils’ clubs, East-West school partnerships, companies led by pupils
  • Qualification and consultation of the project “Point of view” regarding the issue of right-wing extremism at schools
  • Consultation of Jewish immigrants from the Ex-Soviet Union
  • Issue of books and research in the public media library on all relevant topics in co-operation with ARIC Berlin

Partners of the RAA Berlin:
In 1997, the Centre for Democratic Culture (CDC) was founded as a specific issue-related partner project. The CDC analyses the forms and appearance of the modern right-wing extremism, informs and consults communities, youth institutions, schools, companies and administrations.
The RAA Berlin is a member of the Federation for Intercultural Work. It co-operates within the Federal Association of the Regional Offices for Foreigners with the other 48 centres in East and West Germany. Apart from that, the Commissioner for Foreigners of the Berlin Senate and the Jewish congregation in Berlin are the most important partners.
